Curriculum
The Little Brown School follows the Good Start, Grow Start guidelines which are the accepted standards for toddlers and pre-schoolers in South Carolina. In addition to these standards, we use the Handwriting without Tears curriculum to teach students writing (printing) skills that they will carry forward into kindergarten. Many local kindergartens use the Kindergarten & 1st grade levels of the Handwriting without Tears program, so students who have learned to write at LBS are well-prepared to jump right into that curriculum when they get to kindergarten. More information about Handwriting without Tears program is available from their website.
Equally as (and probably more) important than the academic curriculum is way LBS approaches the development of the whole child. Our ultimate goal is to prepare your child for kindergarten, which is far more than simply making sure they have met the math and language standards expected for kindergarten entry. We strive to help your child develop the social and emotional skills that they will need to become kind and compassionate friends and classmates. We emphasize manners and respect for others to start them on the path to becoming responsible citizens. We teach responsibility and allow children to take the lead in the classroom so that one day they will become the leaders of their communities. We integrate stewardship and work to inspire their awe of and respect for the natural world.
